Feeding Goldfish
Goldfish are very active, They should be fed at least once a day or
sometimes twice if they are good eaters. Goldfish have large appetites
and they are omnivorous, they eat anything so it is important to provide
them proper foods that are essential for their growth and development.
There are plenty of goldfish foods in the market, some frozen fish foods
are also available.
Pond goldfish should be fed at least twice a day especially during
warmer months because they hibernate in cold weather and they don't eat
during these times.
It is important to feed your fish at regular intervals, even if they
appear to be searching for food. Overfeeding is one of the greatest
cause of death of some goldfish. Most experts agree that it is better to
feed your aquarium fish many small meals at frequent intervals than one
large meal. It is also important to familiarise yourself with the
varieties of fish foods available in your local area.
Like most animals, goldfish also require foods from different groups for
healthy survival. They also need varying amounts of vitamins, minerals,
fat, carbohydrates and proteins. Vitamin A, D, E and K gives the
goldfish a healthy coloring. Vitamin B6 and C are necessary to a good
goldfish diet. Most of the commercially available foods for goldfish
contain necessary amounts of required vitamins and minerals a goldfish
may need. Some of these minerals include iron, copper, cobalt and zinc.
Goldfish food should contain at least 12% of protein. They also need
fats for energy but sometimes too much fat will cause fatty degeneration
of the liver. The required amount of fat for goldfish is not over than
4%. These minerals are essential in keeping your pet goldfish healthy.
