Goldfish Breeding

Goldfish is known for having wide range of species, but all of them belong to the generic family Carassius auratus. They have been bred by the Chinese, Japanese and Koreans. Currently there are 120 goldfish variety that exist and it keeps on increasing every year.

If you wish to breed your own pet goldfish, you can do so by acquiring an aquarium or pond, provided the area is large enough for your goldfish to swim freely. Preparing your goldfish for breeding is just a matter of diet. Using temperature as your guide followed by proper feeding and care, all these steps will help you achieve the goldfish bred you want.

Times with the higher temperatures like springtime is usually the best time to spawn goldfish. If the temperature is raised from five to ten degrees either naturally or artificially, goldfish can usually be stimulated. If the water temperature is already at 65 degrees or higher, lowering it by 5 degrees has a similar effect. In all cases of trying different temperature changes, the health of the goldfish should be the primary concern.

The odds of having at least two male/female pairs in any selection of six young goldfish are good instead of selecting any sort of mating trio. Females appear stouter on one side during the breeding season. Determining the sex of goldfish is relatively easy during the breeding season. The greatest change occurs in male goldfish because they develop the so called breeding pimples or known as tubercles. Goldfish are more capable of breeding when they gets older. Keeping young goldfish as pet is highly recommended by most experts because its the easiest way to determine their sex as they grow older.
