Goldfish Health

The instances of death in goldfish are few because they are very hardy and strong. This may sound very contrary to the beliefs of some pet owners who consider goldfish as short lived pets. Just like most animals that lives on Earth, staying healthy is the essential factor to survive. After all you will find that you will be able to enjoy your pet goldfish for many years.

Goldfish kept in too little water may die, that is because their water is polluted. Polluted water is always the initial cause of bacterial diseases in goldfish. The dangers of polluted water exist in the aquariums and pools because keeping a dirty water may cause bacterial diseases to spread out. The best preventive for such diseases is for your tank or pool to be thoroughly disinfected at the outset. If the pollution is caused by uneaten food, reduce the amount of food you give each mealtime. You may also try to introduce additional life to your fish's environment such as plants or small sea creatures like snails and etc. Their presence help prevent pollution to arise.

Sickness and infection can spread rapidly in the aquatic environment. It is important to keep medical supplies for your fish. Goldfish are very sensitive to anything out of the ordinary. Any change in the general behavior of your fish can be a sign of illness. If they start to swim unbalanced or appear to be restless, they may be suffering from common indigestion. This is not serious if corrected right away.

Prevention is better than cure, it will be established by giving the fish more room to swim and by reducing the population in their environment. Overfeeding is also a common problem of most goldfish. The intestines of the fish become overloaded and press against the air-bladder. It will be prevented if you place your goldfish in a shallow pan poured with water deep enough to cover its dorsal fin. You may also try to dissolve a small amount of salt in the water.

Normal maintenance and cleaning of your aquarium or pool, proper population control of fish and plant and regular feedings of proper foods are the important factors in preventing diseases to attack your goldfish. These actions and a ready knowledge of any problems that may arise should keep your goldfish happy, active and fascinating for many years to come.
